McCalls 3830Hey Y'all!
So this skirt isn't really blog worthy.. Not much to talk about it. It's an easy make, has only 5 pattern pieces, is a great wardrobe builder for church, work if you have a professional dress code, or depending on the material you use could be a casual pencil skirt.

I used a woven peach skin type material that had a slight stretch to it.
Pattern Description: Its a basic pencil skirt that comes in 5 lengths. Mccalls 3830

Pattern Sizing: I made this in a 14 and made very few alterations. The alterations I did make are to eliminate the vent ( i will not do that next time) It really affects the way the skirt sits on the backside. I also pegged the hem in 1 inch on each side.

Were the instructions easy to follow? This was a pretty simple skirt to make.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? It has a facing but I will make a waistband next time. I think thats my preference on skirts.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? This is probably my 2nd or 3rd time making this skirt. I like it but probably need to look at other skirt patterns as well.
Yep,
I know I'm treading into dangerous territory here and I know the topic of wearing leggings as pants gets a lot of discussion both yah and nay.. I say do what you like! I personally have made lots of leggings but I would only wear them to the gym or while running, that is until I rummaged through my fabric shelves and found enough leftovers of a pretty floral scuba knit"ish" floral fabric that I originally intended as running pants.

So I whipped them up in my most favorite leggings pattern ever. The company is Patterns for pirates the name is Peglegs. I love them. I'm too lazy to post pics of all my running pants Ive made in the past using this pattern but here are just a few that I could find quickly. All made for working out. Ive probably made this pattern at least 8-9 times. They hold up well while stretching, bending and running.

Anyway I made them up in my regular size in the scuba knit.. And they didn't fit. I could barely pull them up on my legs, let alone over my butt. What I didn't realize is that the pattern calls for a 2 way/4way stretch (whichever phrase you use) but this particular knit only had a one way horizontal stretch. They were too small I was devastated!

But I had just enough fabric left to squeeze out another pair a size larger. (In all honesty I should have sized up more because they are just a wee bit too snug) but I decided I was gonna make them work.

After I got them sewed up I realized I really did love them and there was no way I couldn't actually wear these out..in public..as pants... So that's what I did and I'm glad about it.

One thing I learned is that for a good fitting leggings its best for your fabric to stretch in both directions. You all probably already knew that but I learned the hard way.

Good Morning y'all

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter Sunday. Mine was lovely.. Church, a long nap, and I didn't have to cook. Score! To top it all off I wore this lovely floral outfit I whipped up over the weekend. I'm proud of this for 2 reasons...1. I think it's pretty cute and 2. I never sew a garment so quickly. I'm the sloooowest sewer ever no matter how easy the pattern is. Maybe 30 minutes here, 30 minutes next week, 30 minutes next month.. lol j/k but seriously I take forever to complete a garment.

Anyway, here it is Mc Calls 7099 . After I finished I tried it on and thought, this looks like pjs, and it was way too busy. I wanted to break it up with a white blazer but of course none of the 3 RTW white blazers I own looked good with it. Once I threw on my yellow shoes and found a yellow belt that matched exactly I decided to go with it.

One thing I learned about this material is not all knits are the same. I've made this pattern before with a jersey knit and liked the fit much better. I still need to do some tweaking to my pattern for a better fit.
Pattern Description: Loose-fitting romper and jumpsuits have raised neckline, mock wrap, gathered, blouson bodice, front band extending to back neckline, elasticized waist, and side pockets. Pattern Sizing: I made a 14 in View D

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were not difficult to follow.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked that there were only 7 pattern pieces. I'm a fan of easy.

Fabric Used: I used a floral Poly/spandex blend (95% polyester) (5% Spandex)

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The neck band on the pattern has a dip or "v"in the center back. I'm not a fan of this so I eliminated that design element and did a regular neckband all around.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I'm pretty sure I will, but I have a couple other jumpers lined up first. The next one already cut out and ready to go is McCalls 7203

Conclusion: I really like this one. I could make it over and over again. I'm pretty sure jumpsuits and maxi skirts are my new wardrobe stable for the spring.

The Cost: Fabric regularly 14.99, I used a 50% off coupon so paid less that 22.50 for jumper

This is a quick one. I have fallen in love with the simplicity but drama of the maxi skirt. This is a pretty simple pattern drafted from my own measurements. I initially used the Mimi G Regal Maxi tutorial found here and have since been whipping them up. I think I have made 4 of these so far. They are simple but the fabric choice makes all the difference.
I'm not a big fan of camouflage on myself but when I saw this quilting cotton for $2.00/yd at a local fabric warehouse in my area I thought why not? If I don't like it, it didn't cost me much and I didn't waste a fabric that I love.. Well I'm glad I took the chance because I love the end result.

I paired this with a simple lightweight jacket/blazer trimmed in faux leather and wore this to church on Sunday.

The one thing I have noticed that I don't particularly care for is that the gathers in all this material has a tendency to make me look more hippy than I really am, and who needs that? So in my next maxi I'm contemplating pleats instead of gathers just to see how I like it.

This maxi can be styled up or down made dressy or casual that's what I love about it.

I also made a matching fold over clutch but did not carry it with this outfit. I just thought it was a bit much all together but, can totally see this clutch with a cute pair of boyfriend jeans, a simple v-neck t-shirt and a pair of booties.

I don't have a lot of details or great pics on this one but decided to post anyway. I initially started this jacket back in May of 2015. I purchased the denim from a thrift store for $2.50 total and there were a little over 3 yards in all.
So here's what happened that caused it to sit unfinished for the last 9 months.
I cut the size 18 (the reason escapes me at the moment why I cut that size) in View B.
I got it all sewed up and loved the pleated peplum, the princess seaming and the fabric but hated the huge sleeve cap. So I hung it on the back of my door where the rest of the unfinished garments that I plan to salvage are hanging out. I planned to unpick and remove the sleeve and narrow down the sleeve cap both on the bodice and the sleeve itself. Every time I looked at it I wanted to do it but the task seemed so overwhelming and I'm just not at the place where alterations (no matter how small) come easy. I put it off and kept telling myself I will do it after the next garment, then the next, then..well you get the point...its 9 months later.
So this past Sunday I grabbed it tried it on asked my husband his opinion and he responded "Oh shoulder pads are back in style?' He was so serious, bless his heart.

I decided to wear it as is because the likelihood of me "fixing" it were slim to none and I really liked it outside of the sleeves. So I got dressed and wore it to church even though I cringed about that boxy shoulder pad look.

Lesson here.. I understand the importance of making a muslin of items but I'm just to darn lazy to do it most times. I need to change that bad habit.

I'm curious do you guys muslin every garment?
How long do you keep the muslins for? I cleaned out my office/sewing room and threw out about 5-6 garments I knew I would never ever finish.
I know its been a long time since Ive been around these parts. I have had so much going on in my life and just haven't had the time to blog or sew. I was however, able to squeak a garment out in time for my company Christmas party this year. I actually started out making a different dress but it didn't turn out so well. So I had to change directions and because time was limited I had to make something I could do basically with my eyes closed.

First, I decided not to make a dress and settled for one I had previously made for my Anniversary last year. Its an all time favorite V1314 blogged about here It was a perfect holiday color in a nice emerald green. I have made this dress several times and still really love it.

V1314

I decided to add a little bling with one of my all time favorite patterns M6844
Ive made this garment several times so I won't go into a lot of detail here. I made the bodice with one type of sequin and had to do the flounce in a totally different sequin because I ran out. But in my opinion it doesn't look bad.

M6844 in sequin

I lined the bodice and sleeve because the sequin was pretty lightweight. I made View C.
Hey Y'all
This post is dedicated to a few garments that I didn't think needed a whole blog post by themselves.

1st up:
I have many garments hanging in my home office closet, which is where I sew ( I sew in the home office, not the closet lol) that for one reason or another didn't make the cut but instead of throwing them out I've kept them to revisit at a later time to see if I could make it work.
Enter McCalls 6558 I attempted this dress over 2-3 years ago near the time I first started sewing. I was attempting to make view E but with the ruffle from view B but, somehow got overwhelmed when I sewed the ruffles on backwards and upside down.. and it got thrown in the deep dark dungeon with the rest of the unfinished projects that I didn't have the energy to figure out or finish.
I had to chuckle when I pulled this dress out because looking at attaching a ruffle to a dress now doesn't seem very difficult at all but when you are just starting out, and not very skilled at reading patterns well...
I ripped the ruffle off to reattach correctly and afterwards realized I really didn't care for it now. I went with View E, the elasticized top. It was simple, took me all of 30 minutes because the skirt was already complete. I wish I could have lengthened the bodice by an inch or so but the only fabric I had were the 2 ruffles and I had to cut a front and back bodice from that . Nothing spectacular. But it is a cute little dress.
Made from a Teal/Mint striped gauze that frays like crazy that I believe came from Walmart. Its a size 14.

So horrible that I hate to even share this. Stripes running every which way.

I loved this fabric and was actually saving it to make a wrap dress but figured it would be easy to match the larger stripes for this dress instead of a fabric with smaller stripes. As soon as I cut the bodice and saw that it was not matching I decided not to cut the skirt according to the pattern layout (I was honestly afraid of messing up even further). I cut the skirt with the stripes running horizontal in order to save fabric. I sewed it up to see how bad the damage was. A definite eyesore!

So, I did my best to make the best of it, and used what leftover fabric I had to come up with this..

Hey Y'all
Let me start by saying I love color, the louder the better, I always have. I have never been a "I love black, I love earth tones, I love muted colors" kind of person. With that being said this dress is one colorful frock and I almost second guessed myself after I had it made up. But, I threw it on and wore it anyway and I'm glad I did because I love it. I don't think its something I will wear a lot or very often because this is loud, bright and memorable but I do like the print and the pattern. On to the review.

Pattern Description: Dress has fitted, lined bodice variations with back princess seams, semi fitted skirt, back zipper and self belt. A: front tucks. B. side front button bodice. C. back slit. B and C: front princess seams.

Pattern Sizing: 8-24. I made view C. I made the size 16 bodice and size 18 skirt which was a little roomy and I could have taken a bit of the roominess out of the skirt and probably will on my next go at this pattern.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I believe so.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Instructions were not difficult at all to follow along.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? No dislikes.

Fabric Used: Not sure of the fabric content. It is a woven with no stretch. Possibly a cotton jacquard or maybe even a twill. I didn't jot the content down when I purchased it, which I usually try and do.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I omitted the self belt, I lengthened the bodice by 1 inch. After basting the bodice together I determined I needed to take it in an additonl 3/8 of an inch.
I believe the pattern calls for lining of the dress. I didn't line it. My material was thick enough to not require a lining, and I always wear half slips with my dresses when I wear them to church anyway.
I used bias binding on the neck.
Hey Y'all,
I am so very late to the Maxi skirt trend and honestly I don't know what I've been waiting on.
A pattern was not used on this one, although many patterns can be found out there for similar styles of skirts. I used my measurements along with Mimi G's Regal Maxi Tutorial which can still be found here and let me tell ya. I'm feeling mighty Regal in this one. The fabric I ordered from an online shop called Fabian and Mom which was suggested by a young lady from a sewing group I belong to. This was my first time sewing with a wax cotton fabric and honestly I'm not sure if I'm a fan of that type of fabric or not but I will try it again to be able to make a better judgement call.

Once i plugged my measurements in: waist, length and got the fabric cut out this was a simple one to get sewn up. I paired this with a top I blogged about before Simplicity1364.
I wore this lil number to church and received tons of compliments.

I kept the length on this one pretty long and used a 1 inch hem because I will probably always have heels on with this one.

Wish I would have thought to get a close up picture of the back because I'm getting pretty good at this invisible zipper thing.

What I continue to realize is that I really need to invest in a serger. I'm at the point where I want my garments to look a bit more polished on the insides. I just keep talking myself out of making the investment and continue to do a close zig-zag stitch on my seam allowances but that's not gonna cut it for much longer .

I took my waist measurement for the waistband and added a inch for seam allowance and the waist came out significantly too big so I had to add the belt, which I didn't love with the outfit but I wanted to wear this on this day so I made it work. You can see what I'm talking about if you look close.

I would have preferred my skirt to be a bit fuller but this was only 45 inch fabric and not 58-60 inch which I did not realize when I ordered this. Lesson Learned.
Overall I am really pleased with this skirt. I know how to tweak it for next time and I love that with a change of material I can make this for summer, spring, winter and/or fall.

First before we get into the review can I tell y'all how much I love this one here? I mean I really love it like for real for real love. I love this one so much that I have another one cut out waiting to be sewn up.
I wore this to a Conference that I was so blessed to be able to attend this weekend in Houston. The conference was Mimi Gs' Passion to Profit tour. The conference was informative, she was personable and informative and had an awesome friend/contributor Tieko Nejon who spoke on branding and marketing. I am not at a stage where I am ready nor interested in monetizing, branding or marketing but when I am I think I will be ready with the info they shared.
Funny Story.. Someone complimented me on my outfit, and of course I had to say "Thanks I made it!" Then she asked me what pattern? For the life of me I could not remember.. *insert funny here* another lady whom I had not met yet at this point speaks up and says "Oh its McCalls 7099. I turn and ask her "how do you know that? Does it look homemade?" (which would not have been a compliment) she explains no but she knew the pattern right away because she had made it recently. She takes out her phone and begins to share her pics and before you know it we are standing there looking at pics of our handmade garments from our phones oohing and awwwing like we are sharing pics of our beloved children. Oh those memories still crack me up. *end of funny*

On to the review:
The pattern is M7099 View C. A misses jumper/romper with tapered legs.

Pattern Sizing: I cut the 14. I Could have easily gotten away with a 12 but the 14 was the smallest in my pattern envelope.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Instructions were simple enough. Nothing very difficult if I recall correctly. I made this back in May but just had the opportunity to wear it now.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Love that it was simple to assemble. There were only 6 pattern pieces

Fabric Used: I used a black/white/Grey knit I purchased from JoAnns back in January.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
- The bodice was very roomy and I ended up taking in an additional inch on each side seam.
- I used 3/8 elastic at the waist instead of the 1/2 suggested.
- The underarm is very low and will show bra strap if a narrow hem is done. I chose to finish the raw edge and only turned under once. Next time I make it I will raise armhole probably 1/2 inch or so.
-I made an almost fatal rookie mistake near the end of completing. I was trimming my pants seams. I was not going to finish the seams because its knit and wouldn't ravel. I don't yet have a serger and didn't want to take the extra step of finishing on my machine like I normally do (being lazy) I cut a about a 2 inch gash in one pants leg. I was horrified, like almost near tears horrified. I decided to just narrow the pant as much as I could to hide the tear..so I took both pants legs in the same amount, and honestly you cant really tell the difference in my opinion.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes. I already have it cut out.

Conclusion: Well you know by now. I love it.
I didn't get the chance to take many pictures of this one, but you'll be seeing it again I'm sure.

This is such a simple plain black top that its almost not worthy of its own blog post. Wait a minute... Anything I start, complete and wear is worthy of an individual blog post because if I was going to be completely honest recently its been far and between (is that how the saying goes?) since I could post something wearable.

Anyway, I needed a simple black top that I could pair with a skirt to wear to a midday wedding. This was a purchased skirt from F21 a couple years back that I never wore because 1. I bought it for church without trying it on then realized the under slip was too short and sheer and 2. I just didn't have a simple shirt to pair it with.

My first fix was the skirt. I had to cut out the sheer, thin, short slip that was attached to the skirt. The attached slip barely covered my bum, and although probably really sexy on someone else Im not about that life. So I took a black slip I had on hand ( I buy slips anytime I am at a thrift store and they are cheap) and stitched it to the underside of the skirt waistband. PROBLEM SOLVED

Second, was the top Simplicity 1364
I made the size 16 in a black Peachskin. This fabric was originally $9.99 but was on sale for 30% off and I used an additional 20% of coupon so this top cost me a little over $6.

Initially, I wasn't sure about the neckline but after it was complete I really liked it. Like the pattern envelope suggested this top sews up in a "Jiffy". There are only 4 pattern pieces the front, back, and 2 facings.
The waist/bottom of the top was tight and narrow, I couldn't pull it all the way over my hips but where it stopped was fine for me. I cut the back on the fold and had a back center seem choosing to omit the lapped back zipper. The underarm was a bit too tight for my liking and I knew it would get irritating after wearing for awhile so I snipped out 1/2 inch from the underarm from the notch to edge. This gave me the perfect amount of ease I needed.

I decided to sew up a pattern that I hadn't sewn before so I reached for OOP Kwik Sew 3229. It looked simple enough.. My plans were to narrow the legs quite a bit and maybe add elastic to make them joggers.. here's what happened.

Kwik Sew 3229 and a camouflage poly-cotton blend from Hancock's

I used the size XL. This pattern calls for a stretch fabric. I did not use a knit so I decided to use the largest size in the envelope. I narrowed each pant leg on inner and outer seam by 1 inch . That resulted in the pants still being fuller than I desired. I took off an additional 1/2 inch or so on each side but for some reason I only did this to front pant leg. So.. the back pant leg was much fuller than my front. But I think it would have been anyway minus my mix up with the adjustments cause it was like a major difference between the front and back pant legs. At this point I decided not to make them joggers and leave them as is.
I lengthened the bodice by three inches.

I swear the sun will just not cooperate with me. I squint in every single picture.

Instead of cutting the back on the fold I cut two pieces and added an exposed zipper

It looks like my right leg is off grain and the pattern is running upwards. Its not.. I had just adjusted the belt I had on and the waist was caught underneath the belt.

Per the pattern instructions the SA was to be 1/4. I used a 5/8 in the bodice area and about 1 1/2 in the seams of the pants to take away a bit more of the fullness.

I opted not to do a fabric belt and used a 1 inch elastic instead of the 3/8 as instructed in the instructions.

This was a $2.50 poly-cotton blend fabric and I initially was just using this as a muslin and although I don't love it, I decided to wear it out this day for lunch anyway.

The bodice does have a front and back facing and I really liked that. So no bias binding or narrow hem at neck and arms.

This wasn't a terrible pattern but its also not one Ill probably be running back to either. The wide legs are just too much for what I wanted in this particular jumper.

This pattern is an oldie.. McCalls 6700. If I knew how easy it was to whip up, I would have made this a long time ago. I started on Friday, completed on Saturday and wore to church on Sunday. There are only 5 pattern pieces required in order to make this dress. and y'all know me... One day I will kick the habit of going the easy route but for now it works for me. Making simple, uncomplicated pieces works for both my time and my wardrobe lifestyle.

I used this blue/White/Teal spandex knit that I have had for probably 2 or 3 summers. I cant recall where it was purchased from.

The first thing I did was change the back up a tad bit. I wasn't fond of the the long ties in back. I widened each tie (there were originally 2) by 1/2 inch to make easier for turning once I attached them I didn't like the way they looked or hung. So I removed one all together, shortened the other and tacked to the other side of the shoulder.

I ended up tacking both the front and back bodice down to eliminate the gaping. It was a simple fix and it worked but I still decided to wear a thin cami underneath just in case.

Other than the back straps and tacking the bodice closed I didn't make any other alterations. WHEN I make this again I will probably lengthen the bodice by an inch or so, the bodice was just a little short for my taste.

This was really a fun dress to make up. I could honestly have a ton of these in a bunch of pretty wild prints for summer. The one thing I may do differently when I make this up is to change the back bodice to a one panel cut on the fold back. Other than this I would keep everything exactly the same.

That's it for now. If you haven't made this one up yet, you should!

I'm looking at my pattern catalog and I'm thinking a one piece jumper is in my near future.
Have a Great week. Talk to y'all later!
I didn't quite achieve my goal of 10 Me-Made items for for May. But, I squeaked by with 8 and for me that is a HUGE accomplishment. Granted some of these things were made previously and I just had never gotten around to wearing them. Some things I did make in May I didn't get a chance to wear but will be able to share later.
Anyway here is a fun little skirt I wore the other day.
This fabric is so busy but perfect for summer. I purchased this fabric from my local Jo Ann's (ironically last May)
The Me Made May challenge that I took (although modified) has been very difficult to document via pictures.
I am fairly new to blogging and I find getting pictures of myself is proving to be very interesting to say the least. I admire all you ladies that have beautiful pictures always in a new spot with a pretty background and model like poses.
I pledged to wear/make 10 handmade garments in May and as of today May 29th I'm failing miserably although, I must say I have worn more handmade garments in this one month than I ever have considering Mon-Thurs I wear scrubs. There are still a couple more days left so who know what may happen.

Anyway, outfit # 6 This was a day filled with lots of rain (we're practically under water in some areas here in Texas), running errands, a trip to the mall, having a midday date with the hubby and mattress shopping. I didn't even think to get a picture of myself in the outfit . While out mattress shopping we ran into friends who snapped this pic of us.

One thing I'm loving right now is the wide leg, loose fitting easy make, easy wear type of pant. I love them whether they have an elastic waist or if they have a waistband and zipper (although my invisible zipper installation still leaves a bit to be desired). I still cant figure out why my invisible zipper does not turn out "invisible" but I'm gonna continue to work on it.

Pattern Description: Pants have contour waistband, side zipper, narrow hem and various width variations.

Pattern Sizing: I made size Large. View C

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I think so

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, they were pretty simple to follow along with

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like that this pattern only had 4 pattern pieces (the lessor number of pattern pieces the more likely I am to make, and finish a garment with minimal errors.) I'm kinda lazy like that.

Fabric Used: A lightweight black and white polka dot poly blend that I have had for a while now.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't make any alterations. I sewed this straight from the envelope. The next time I make this pattern I will add side pockets ( I really love pockets in pants) and I will lengthen maybe 3 inches or so. I can only wear this pair with flats because they are barely long enough. If I wore these with heels they'd prob be ankle length and I desire a pant like this to at least graze the top of my shoe.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will be sewing this again. I will be sewing these up again soon I suspect.

Conclusion: I really like these pants. I love how airy and comfortable they are.

I forgot to get pics without the vest, The back of this tank was so cute. I threw the jean vest on top of the tank because I had a early Saturday morning meeting at church and this was a racer back tank with exposed silver zipper . I like to stay moderately modest when I'm in the church building. Even though it was not a Sunday and our church is pretty casual I feel there should still be some discretion (in terms of dressing) used in certain places.

When I decided to take the MMM'15 pledge discussed on my previous post here . I modified it so that I would commit to wearing 10 Me Mades' for the month of May (2 item each weekend/or 1 item each weekend day ) . If I happened to get more than that worn or sewn then....Woo Hoo! But I don't do sewing challenges much so I needed to keep it simple and attainable.

Item # 3 McCall's 6843 loose fitting pants

Pattern Description: I made view C which is described as loose fitting pants through hips with side pockets
Pattern Sizing: XS-XXL. I made Large

The wind was blowing outside, even with two additional inches removed these are still big

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? They were simple.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Only 3 pattern pieces, and these types of pants are totally on trend right now. They are long. These would be perfect with heels, I would suggest shortening if you plan to wear with flats.
Fabric Used: Not totally sure. A really lightweight possibly rayon blend of some sort purchased from my local Walmart awhile back
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: OK, these ran really big or I just totally missed the measurements and purchased the wrong size. Large was the smallest size I had so I started with that but I ended up taking a total of 1 inch off of each side seam and I could have taken a bit more.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Item #4 New Look 6189
This was kind of a redemption piece for me. I have been in somewhat of a sewing slump but these pants made me feel pretty good about myself. I love them!

Pattern Description: Cuffed Capri pants with side zipper, belt loops, and contoured waistband
Pattern Sizing: I made 16 View A

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? A fairly easy pair of pants to make that does not include elastic in the waist. I liked the waistband and belt carriers. The pants are not as narrow as the picture on the pattern envelope suggest but I knew that already from other reviewers.
Fabric Used: A home Dec textured yellow and tan fabric from Hancock's that I purchased close to 2 yrs ago

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I added pockets. I moved the side zip to the back. I omitted the slit in the front waistband. There are some weird pull lines that I need to figure out how to get rid of for the next time. I also need to figure out what type of crotch adjustment I need to make in pants. Once I get that figured out these will be a perfect pair of pants

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I love these pants. I got tons of compliments when I wore them to a church event. Actually about 4 women asked could I make them a pair. I sadly had to give my standard answer. "Sorry I cant. I'm a selfish sewer besides these would be out of style by the time I got around to sewing for you." That last part is true. I am the worlds slowest sewer.
Conclusion: Great pants, I can see dressing them up or down depending on the fabric and styling
At the time I didn't quite know exactly what the challenge consisted of. But, now I do.

Its a challenge, initially created by a blogger Zoe where a person vows to wear something hand made everyday for the month of May. This challenge can be modified to fit your lifestyle and such. The entire challenge can be found here on this blog

I decided to take the challenge but had to curtail it to fit my lifestyle and available sewing time (or lack thereof). I wear scrubs to work so it was unrealistic for me to vow to wear something 'me made' every day unless of course it was scrubs, and honestly I'm just not that excited about sewing scrubs.

Wearing 'Me Made' clothing only on the weekend is not as lofty a challenge
as those who are gonna wear handmade items everyday. However, it still puts me in at least 10
(5 weekends in May this year) hand made garments this month which would be the
absolute most "me Made' items I have made or worn in a month ever! So this is a pretty serious
challenge for me.
no pattern
used on this purple/gray gradient chiffon maxi skirt. I used a
gray knit as the underskirt. This was a super simple skirt to make. I took my
waist measurement x 1.5 and used that much fabric. sewed it onto a 3 inch wide
piece of elastic the measurement of my waist, hemmed and VOILA! I
got several compliments the day I wore this out to the Casino with

Flowered scuba knit pencil skirt. No pattern used (fabric cut based on my waist and hip measurement),and desired length, I hemmed and..Voila!
I have never used scuba knit prior to this skirt but I love the ease in which it sewed and I still have close to 2 yards left of this fabric so I will be making something else soon with it. I purchased a few weeks back from Joann's for $3.50/yd
I've been gone for awhile and its been hard coming back. I have no motivation to sew and when I do conjure up the energy its been wadder, after failure, after poorly fitting garment, after disappointment after... well I think you get the point? I have not made a single wearable garment in months..

What happened?
I lost my mom on February 9th, she lived with my husband and I for 3 years as she battled lung cancer. I was with her when she passed in her bedroom in our home. It was by all accounts a peaceful transition but it has left me empty. I have been trying to get back to things that I enjoy (sewing being one of them) but all the things I enjoy include her..

My mom and I Mothers Day 2014

She was my #1 critic of my garments. As a young adult and single mom she used to sew all her own and my older siblings clothing when they were younger. Sewing was something she learned to do as a child growing up in the country on a farm. It was not a hobby it was a necessity for survival such as learning to cook, and clean and milk cows and tend a garden. She had no formal training just instruction from her mom, trial and error and the need to "make it work". Man I miss her!

Anyway, its been a long slow process getting back but I have made a few things, none of which makes me happy but I'll share anyway.

The first is New Look 6301 which I have made before but this time I wanted to extend the length and make a maxi.. What I got according to my husband was a "flowery house dress" Sigh... He was right. Its just not doing it for me so I have just been wearing it around the house. As a house dress its perfect, as a nice spring maxi .. FAIL!

Ok, So I figured third times a charm right!? So I commence to make up New Look 6735 I extended it in length by about 9 inches or so to make into a cardigan/duster.

I have another couple garments I could share but I'm still contemplating how to make them work (I'll share either way later) .
Needless to say I've been very discouraged with the outcomes of most garments and even when I try to do something simple to get quick easy favorable results I have still only been getting a BIG FAT FAIL!

So I'm taking a breather, not for long just long enough to get my sewing legs back under me. In the meantime I have visited the library checked out a few sewing related books and have gotten into sewing knowledge, dress making basics and other things that I never took the time to study before I delved into sewing.

What is your go to thing to sew to get you out of your sewing rut?

I'm hoping to be back sewing soon. In the meantime I'm hoping you ladies are having much better success than me.
See ya later!
Hey Y'all

So, I did it again.. "What?" I made another garment with a characteristic that I don't really care for on myself simply because I saw it on other bloggers like Erica and Adrienne and it looked fantastic. I tend to do this from time to time.
I know pretty much what does and does not work for my body and what I just don't particularly like in clothing on myself but every now and again I will make something that I know I will not probably wear anyway... That sounds so silly now that I just typed it out but it is what it is and it has happened on more than one occasion.

This dress Vogue 8939 is a turtleneck dress (obviously). I don't really care for turtlenecks on me, I never have since I was just a wee little girl and I had them in every color, design, and cartoon character possible. My mom was a believer in if it looks good, is inexpensive and available buy all they have.. I have so many pictures of me as a kid in turtle neck tops.

Anywho.. I saw the ladies mentioned above and their dresses and I loved it. I had actually made this dress before when I first started sewing, I made it up in a Ponte knit and fully lined it. As expected didn't like it, it was way to heavy and it has been hanging in my closet untouched every since, So what sense did it make to whip the pattern out of hiding and sew it up again? None! No sense at all but that's exactly what happened and here it is. Guess what?? I actually like it. Well the turtleneck part is bothersome but I like this dress enough to get at least one wear out of it..

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I lengthened it 5 inches

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I do recommend the pattern but not sure i will sew it again simply because turtlenecks bother/irritate me after awhile.

Conclusion: Very simple dress but very chic. I suggest making this before the cold weather is a distant memory.

Do you ever make something that you are on the fence about from the start? I'm glad I followed through on this one.
Happy Sewing! In addition to creating the garment you then have to state the percent saved by sewing the garment in comparison to the RTW garment if purchased.

I began to ponder what to make.. It was a toss up but I eventually decided to make a quick top.
Every since last season I have been smitten with the leather front sweatshirts (even making one from NL6230 in Jan. 2014). They are snazzy but still casual, can be dressed up or down and can be worn by men and women.

I decided this time on McCall's 6992 here's a collage of some of the inspiration tops that I love and pinned.
Designer version Vs. my version

Pattern Description: Fitted, pullover tops have neck and sleeve bands, and hemline variations. A, B and C: lower band.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, for the most part it was the same idea.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Instructions were pretty simple but for some reason I got mixed up on the arm cuffs (around steps 10-12)and it took a bit of extra time AND some seam ripping to get those on correctly but it was totally me and not the pattern instructions

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
-I love the raglan sleeves. I've never done a dart in a sleeve before but I love the way it makes the sleeve fit.
- I love that there are only 6 pattern pieces

Fabric Used: I used a white Ponte knit and a animal print moleskin (with no stretch)

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:. I did not use knit for both fabrics which limited the amount of stretch in the completed garment. I used 1/2 inch SA instead of the recommended 5/8 to allow some extra room I lost by not using a stretch material for the bodice.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I would sew this again using different colors and patterns and possibly a different view. I definitely recommend this pattern.

Conclusion: Its a bit more snug than I prefer but it works! I'm a really slow sewer and I cut and completed this top in one afternoon. I love it.

Cost to make: Pattern 1.99 (on sale)
Animal print fabric $3.50/yd (used less than 1/2 yd) = 1.75
White Ponte knit $7.80/yd
Grand Total= $11.54
Total Savings=$324.46

What you think?
What knock offs have you made lately?
I must admit when I find a pattern that's pretty simple to put together, doesn't require a lot of pieces, time or fuss I seem to make it over and over and over again. If you get tons of compliments while wearing it that's always a plus!
One of those patterns for me is V1314. I absolutely love it. I've made this dress 3 times.
Currently on the cutting table is Butterick 5985 View A. In a pretty blue shimmer cotton sateen

The model photo on the envelope is horrid( in my opinion), the line drawings are better but the lone 2 reviews I saw on PR gave me hope. Lets anticipate a success!

Initially I was not going to do the typical year in review type post because well...if I did I would have to post more fails than success' and more waders than wearers so I decided instead I would just post my top 10 favorites from 2014 in no particular order.
Taking a look back at 2014 I came up with a few 2015 Sewing goals for myself:

Increase my use of woven fabrics for more tailored pieces and less knit pieces (although I love a good Ponte knit)

Take a chance at making pants (since I typically only make skirts and dresses)

Attempt buttons/buttonholes and fly front zippers(goes back to that pants goal above)

Still deciding if I need a fabric buying restriction goal. I'll get back to ya on that one

Question: When do you no longer consider yourself a newbie to the sewing community? I received my sewing machine in November of 2013 but didn't start cranking out garments until 2014 and by cranking them out, I mean in a snails pace kind of way. I guess I still consider myself new because there are so many techniques I still have not attempted. Perhaps, I'm just a slow learner or a scared learner?

I'm curious.. How did you learn to sew and do you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate, or advanced sewer and why?

Let me know,

Hello Y'all and Welcome to my little piece of the blogisphere. I'm new to blogging (This is my 1st post). I have been putting off starting a blog forever. I constantly stalk others' blogs and enjoy and have learned so much from so many wonderful people. I always talked myself out of blogging because I didn't think I had much to offer. However, I decided to do it anyway! New Year... New adventures!
This blog will consist of my adventures in sewing (and petitioning your help when I get stuck), pattern reviews, recreating inspirational ready to wear garments, possibly crafting, finding my fashion sense, and a bit of sporadic randomness here and there. That pretty much sounds like I have no idea what this blog will be about huh? If you said "uhhh Yeah!" Well you are correct.
Just hang with me and we'll figure this thing out together. I will leave you with pics of me on NYE before I was heading out to get my praise on!
